The sustainability committee in Hampshire House has been busy at work celebrating National Bee Day, along with the children. This is more than just a day to celebrate these tiny creatures. It is also a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn about the interconnectedness of all living things and to learn about the importance of biodiversity, and how small actions can have a big impact on the environment. It also fits in beautifully with the project work our children have been carrying out in our preschool classes this year in relation to transformation and life cycles.
Through hands-on, inquiry-driven activities, our celebration of National Bee Day aligns beautifully with our Reggio Emilia philosophy, by allowing our children to explore, create, and make meaning from the world around them. Our children were invited to explore several big questions. Why do bees help flowers grow? What is pollination and how does it work? What would happen if there were no bees? As our children explored these questions, they were encouraged to think critically, collaborate with peers, and engage with the natural world. By learning about the vital role of bees in pollination, our preschoolers are developing a deeper understanding of ecosystems and the importance of taking care of our planet.
In celebration of National Bee Day, the children have also been busy planting bee-friendly flowers in our garden, helping to create spaces where bees can thrive. This hands-on activity not only connects children to nature but also instils a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
