Global Citizenship at Kambala: Educating Women for the Future

At Kambala, our community is committed to instilling unwavering courage and curiosity in our students, ensuring they grow into women of ambition, integrity, and consequence. We believe that curiosity is not just a value but a cornerstone of good global citizenship.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the importance of nurturing globally minded students has never been more critical. Education for global citizenship, a target under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. According to UNICEF, a global citizen understands that everyone has rights and is committed to creating a world where these rights are realised. They appreciate and understand the interconnectedness of all life on the planet.

At Kambala, we are proud to be raising such global citizens—young women who believe in global justice and act to make the world a safer, fairer, and more sustainable place where human rights are protected and respected.

The Role of Global Mindedness

Global mindedness is a key concept that emphasises understanding, respecting, and valuing different cultures. It helps students embrace diversity, promotes respect and collaboration, and fosters high levels of empathy and compassion. This is particularly significant for young women, preparing them to navigate an interconnected world, make responsible choices, and contribute positively to global society.

At Kambala, we celebrate the unique strengths and achievements of our students, who consistently demonstrate a high level of political awareness and active engagement in important issues such as the environment and equal rights. The 2022 International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS), the world’s largest study on global citizenship education involving over 80,000 students across 22 countries, found that female students excel in civic knowledge. This trend has been consistently observed since 2009.

Research also highlights that students from girls’ schools develop greater cultural competencies, community involvement, and civic and political engagement. We are particularly proud of nurturing women of integrity who graduate with a maturity, resilience, and resourcefulness that fosters a truly global perspective. Our students are conscious of a world beyond the school gates, beyond Sydney, and beyond Australia, prepared to contribute meaningfully to a global society.

Our students learn to appreciate different perspectives and recognise the richness that diversity brings. This understanding fosters a more inclusive and empathetic outlook on life. They become clear and confident communicators, active listeners, and respectful towards others—essential skills in our globalised world. We emphasise the importance of making honest and fair choices, and our students take pride in their identity while developing the independence needed to navigate life’s challenges with integrity. By encouraging openness to new experiences and awareness of similarities and differences, we broaden our students’ perspectives. This exposure nurtures a positive attitude towards trying new things and accepting the possibility of being wrong, and continuously seeking improvement. This reflective mindset prepares them for future challenges and opportunities.

Our membership in the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS) significantly enhances our efforts to cultivate global citizenship. This coalition provides us with unique opportunities to connect with other schools worldwide, facilitating cultural exchanges and collaborative projects. These global connections allow our students to engage with diverse perspectives and experiences, further enriching their understanding and preparing them to be active participants in a global society.

By integrating the principles of global mindedness into our curriculum and leveraging our global partnerships, we ensure that Kambala students are not just prepared for the future but are ready to shape it. These young women, educated with a global perspective, are poised to make significant contributions to the world, driving positive change and fostering a more inclusive and compassionate global community.
